Erling Haaland was presented to Manchester City’s fans outside the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The 21-year-old was joined on stage by fellow summer signings Stefan Ortega Moreno and Julian Alvarez. Kalvin Phillips was also meant to be present but missed the event through illness.
Haaland received the biggest cheer of the afternoon when he was brought on stage. City fans know the prolific young striker has the potential to be a game-changing signing.
Among the questions Haaland was asked during Sunday’s presentation was: “Growing up, who did you idolise?”
A clip of the answer he gave, combined with his answer for the same question during his time with Borussia Dortmund, has gone viral on Twitter.
On Sunday, Haaland answered: “In City, I have many jerseys at home from [Sergio] Aguero, I have to say, so him…”
But during his time with Dortmund, Haaland said: “My biggest idol as a child, I had a lot. I cannot say one, so I’ll say two: Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.”
Haaland can’t be blamed if he wanted to keep that quiet during Sunday’s presentation in front of all those City fans.
Admitting that his two biggest idols are current and former Manchester United stars probably wouldn’t have gone down too well, would it?
But we know from his previous comments that both Ronaldo and Zlatan were huge influences on the young Norwegian growing up.
On Ronaldo, Haaland once said, per FourFourTwo: “I would love to meet him and tell him that I am a footballer thanks to him. For me, he was always a role model.”
“I had a lot of role models and looked up to many footballers, but Zlatan Ibrahimović is the biggest one,” he said, per Goal.
“The way he became so good, the way he plays – and also he’s Scandinavian, so someone has to take over from him!
Haaland, however, did manage to further endear himself to City fans when asked which team he’s most looking forward to playing against.
“I don’t like to say the word but Manchester United, yeah,” he replied, laughing.
