Enzo Maresca has admitted he hopes Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer start scoring goals soon after they failed to find the back of the net on Thursday night.

Marc Cucurella scored his sixth goal of the season and his fourth of the calendar year as Chelsea slumped to a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Legia Warsaw in the Conference League on Thursday night.

The Blues still advanced to the semi finals of the competition 4-2 on aggregate, but the result has done nothing to improve the current feeling around the club and Maresca.

Maresca admits it’s not good Cucurella is top scorer in 2025

Maresca fielded a surprisingly strong line-up given the Blues were 3-0 up from the first leg, with Cucurella, Reece James, Palmer and Jackson all starting.

The 45-year-old explained why he started Jackson and Palmer, but the pair were unable to find the back of the net and both put in disappointing performances.

Cucurella once again scored for the Blues and the Spain international has been Chelsea’s biggest attacking threat this year.

Jackson has yet to score in 2025, whilst Palmer is now goalless in his last 15 games, with Maresca admitting he hopes the duo start scoring soon.

“Yeah no, especially the ones that we are missing, unfortunately they are very easy goals, because again I think tonight in the first five minutes we had two chances, but it can happen, hopefully very soon Nico and Cole can start to score goals because they are very important for us,” he told his post-match press conference.

“In this moment the one that is scoring more goals for us is Cucu, and that means a good thing because he’s not the one that has to score goals.”

The lack of goals for the attackers has to be a concern for Maresca, and his two top scorers in the league this season have scored once in 2025, which is something that needs to change if Chelsea stand any chance of qualifying for the Champions League.
