There was an incredible atmosphere in Sydney when hosts Australia took on England on Wednesday’s Women’s World Cup semi-final.

But after an absorbing opening half hour, the 80,000 strong home crowd were stunned into silence by a wonderful goal from England’s Ella Toone.

Alessia Russo got to the by-line and pulled a pass back which evaded Lauren Hemp but landed at Toone’s feet.

And the Manchester United forward instinctively unleashed a rocket of a shot which flew past goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold and into the top corner.

It will surely go down as one of the goals of the tournament. Absolute thunderbolt.
