L’Équipe understands that Southampton Alejandro Gomes Rodríguez (16) has rejected some of Europe’s top clubs in order to join Olympique Lyonnais.

Gomes Rodríguez’s contract at newly-promoted Premier League side Southampton was set to expire, leaving the England youth international with a decision to make. He hasn’t been short of suitors. According to L’Équipe, Manchester City and Chelsea both tabled offers for the young forward, as had multiple unnamed Italian clubs.

However, Gomes Rodríguez has chosen to join Lyon. He is set to sign a three-year deal that will almost certainly be extended for a further two years. The work of recruitment director Matthieu Louis-Jean, who travelled to Southampton on several occasions to convince the Englishman of a move to OL has paid dividends.

Gomes Rodríguez will undergo his medical on Thursday, a day after arriving in France. He will not occupy a non-EU spot in Lyon’s squad as he also possesses a Portuguese passport, whilst he is also eligible to play for Venezuela.
