There was a surprise visitor to the opening UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 roadshow in Sheffield yesterday with England manager Gareth Southgate making an appearance at the event in Peace Gardens.

Southgate guided England’s men’s side to a UEFA EURO 2020 final last summer and he showed his support for the women’s side and the upcoming home EURO’s with a visit to the first UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 roadshow in Sheffield yesterday.

In total, 10 roadshows are being staged across the country in the lead up to this summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2022. The roadshows are free events that will showcase the best of football, fitness and music, providing families, fans and those that are yet to experience football with the opportunity to get involved in an unmissable tournament. They will also offer visitors an introduction to football, with a chance to learn new football skills and tricks as well as trying matchday presenting and interviewing in a special TV studio. Featuring live music from local artists and a showpiece football pitch, alongside the opportunity to get a picture with the trophy itself, each event will provide a variety of fun for all the family.

Additionally, there will be lots of exciting opportunities to meet legends from the women’s game, take part in interactive challenges and find out more about getting involved in grassroots football, the tournament, and how to purchase tickets.

In the opening roadshow event, England boss Southgate met with a number of fans, observed a coaching session and surprised one lucky player with a signed ball. He joined a line-up which included Baroness Sue Campbell, England legend Sue Smith and Tournament Legacy Director Stacey Mullock.

Speaking at the event, Southgate said “Football has long been a part of Sheffield’s identity so it’s fantastic to see how the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 roadshows are helping young people to embrace that passion, have fun and enjoy football.

“It’s always exciting to be the host nation, but this year’s event is set to be even more special with unprecedented demand for tickets and a new generation of fans inspired by the women’s game.”

The second of the 10 roadshows is taking place at Clifton Park in Ratherham today and will be available for fans to visit until 5pm.
