Here’s how it all unfolded.

Frosinone lose to Udinese in relegation six-pointer

Frosinone will be playing Serie B football next season after a final day defeat.

Udinese travelled to Frosinone needing to win to ensure their safety, while Frosinone needed at least a point to be sure of their place in Serie A next season.

Scorers: Davis 76′

And it was the visitors that began the game the stronger, dominating the ball in the opening minutes and testing Cereofolini twice courtesy of striker Brenner, who saw both of his efforts kept out.

Frosinone grew into the affair, but Udinese remained the bigger threat, getting particular joy down the right flank. But the closest either side came to opening the scoring in the first half was courtesy of a set piece, with only the crossbar stopping a Matias Soule free kick handing the hosts the lead.

The second half continued a similarly even contest, with both sides having chances to take the lead and a massive step towards guaranteed safety. Nadir Zortea forced Okoye into action in a cagey affair, as both sides knew a draw would be enough to keep them up should Empoli not win.

But with 15 minutes to go, Udinese struck through half-time substitute Keinan Davis, who latched onto a chest down from Lorenzo Lucca to sweep home a massive goal for his side, which left them on the verge of safety.

In a shock twist, a stoppage time winner elsewhere in Serie A meant that Frosinone, who were in the strongest position heading into the final day and for 85 minutes on the night, will be playing Serie B football next season, while Udinese held onto their top flight spot.

Empoli beat Roma in stoppage time

A stoppage-time goal from M’Baye Niang kept Empoli in Serie A courtesy of a massive win over Roma.

Empoli played host Roma needing all three points to have any chance of Serie A survival, while De Rossi’s side had nothing to play for following Atalanta’s earlier win.

Scorers: Cancellieri 13′: Aouar 45+1

It showed in the opening exchanges. with Roma looking sloppy and Empoli taking full advantage to take a precious lead with their first effort of the game as Cancellieri stroked the ball home from eight yards out.

They were handed a lifeline 10 minutes later though, when VAR deemed Bryan Cristante offside after he thought that he had levelled the game.

Roma continued to dominate the ball, and grabbed a deserved equaliser in first half stoppage time courtesy of forgotten man Houssem Aouar, with the Algerian midfielder stabbing home from close range.

After the break, Empoli came on strongly as they searched for a goal to keep them in Serie A, pushing plenty of players forward in hope of a miracle against the Giallorossi. Cancellieri and Cacace both tested Svilar in the Roma net as the game took on an end to end feel.

Deep into five minutes of stoppage time, Empoli took the lead once more in spectacular fashion as Cancellieri found M’Baye Niang, who smashed the ball into the back of the net and sent the home crowd into delirium.

Inter held by Verona

Inter Milan travelled Verona in a dead-rubber affair with both sides having nothing left to play for this season, and a draw always seemed the likely outcome.

Scorers: Arnautovic 10′, 45+1: Noslin 16′, Suslov 37′

But the game began brightly as Inter made their early dominance pay courtesy of Marko Arnautovic, who latched onto a header from Bisseck before slotting his side ahead.

The lead only lasted minutes though, with Verona hitting the Nerazzurri on the counter attack as Tomas Suslov sped away from Inter defenders before teeing up Tijjani Noslin to bring his side level.

The pair combined again 20 minutes later to the same effect, as Noslin this time turned provided for Suslov to fire a low drive past Emi Audero and hand his side a shock lead.

The crazy first half took another twist right on the stroke of half-time though as Marko Arnautovic grabbed his second of the game to restore parity, who was found by Davide Frattesi and made no mistake to bring Inter level.

The second half saw both sides ring the changes, with Inzaghi in particular affording opportunities to the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Kristjan Asllani and even third choice goalkeeper Raffaele Di Gennaro, who came on for his Inter debut aged 30.

The changes made it a fractured second half, but Inter thought that they had won it late on as Alexis Sanchez turned home in stoppage time, only for the Chilean to be denied by the offside flag in a tie where a draw felt a fair result.

Lazio and Sassuolo also played out a draw. Starting the game in 7th place, Lazio were assured of a European spot for next season, and had only the pride of finishing above Roma to play for as they welcomed already relegated Sassuolo to the Italian capital. Scorers: Zaccagni 60 : Viti 66′ It played out as such too, with the hosts dominating possession but creating very little, while Sassuolo struggled to get into the encounter. On the hour mark, the first piece of quality came about from the boot of Mattia Zaccagni, who fired his side into the lead from a free-kick and put his side on course for three points. But minutes later Sassuolo hit back with a set piece of their own, with Mattia Viti stabbing home a loose ball after Daichi Kamada had given away a free kick. With Roma drawing against Empoli, three points had no impact for either side and as a result there was a lack of conviction from both sets of players, which left a draw always the likely outcome. Atalanta hammer Torino European champions Atalanta play host to Torino knowing that a win would deny Italy a sixth Champions League spot, while the Turin outfit have ambitions of their own to finish above Napoli. Scorers: Scamacca 26′, Lookman 43′, Pasalic (pen) 71′ La Dea were given a guard of honour by the visitors ahead of the game, and began the affair firmly on the front foot. They made their early promise count midway through the first half, when Charles de Ketelaere found Gianluca Scamacca. On the edge of the penalty area and with his back to goal, the ex-West Ham man turned and fired a powerful finish past Luca Gemello to hand his side the lead. They were two to the good before half time, with Ademola Lookman continuing his excellent scoring form by tapping in after an initial effort from Pasalic was spilled by Gemello, allowing the Nigerian to poke home. Torino never looked likely to get back into the game and Atalanta put the tie beyond doubt when Mario Pasalic converted from the spot following a foul from Tameze on Lookman, ensuring that Atalanta walked away with all three points and leaving Roma without Champions League football as a result. Meanwhile, Torino could yet sneak into Europe should Fiorentina win the UEFA Conference League final against Olympiacos on Wednesday. Napoli share drab draw with Lecce A place in European football was not out of the question for Napoli despite their horror defence of the Serie A title this season, though they needed to finish their season with three points to have any chance of midweek action next season. And despite dominating the ball and racking up shots at will, Napoli were their usual wasteful selves in the opening stages. By half time, they had managed almost 70% possession and had seven efforts on goal, but were still yet to hit the target. The second half followed much of the same pattern, with the side from Naples having chance after chance only to fail to find the back of the net. Cyriel Ngonge came off the bench to see an effort saved before crashing another against the woodwork, while Jens Cajuste saw his effort rebound off the post. At the other end, Lecce offered little but threatened to snatch the game when Piccoli found himself inches away from tapping home a cross from Hamza Rafia. With honours even come the final whistle, Napoli’s poor head to head record with Torino ensured that there will be no European football at the Diego Maradona stadium next season.
