England welcomed Austria to the Stadium of Light on Saturday for their latest World Cup qualifier and the hosts come out on top after a 1-0 win.
Scorers: White 39′
Eyeing to extend their lead at the top of Group D, England lunged forward right from the start with Beth Mead and Fran Kirby pulling the strings.
However, a united Austria side featuring Laura Wienroither, Virginia Kirchberger and goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger limited England’s threats during the first 45 minutes.
The breakthrough eventually came just before the break when Kirby set up Ellen White who scored her 45th goal for England on her 100th cap.
Coming out after the break, the momentum shifted in favour of the visitors.
Barbara Dunst almost equalised just five minutes after the restart before goalkeeper Mary Earps was forced to make a diving save on an attempt from Sarah Zadrazil.
Over time, England managed to stifle Austria’s lurking threats and continued to throw numbers forward.
The likes of Kirby and White plus Lauren Hemp and Nikita Parris, however, couldn’t add to the tally seeing England escape with a slim 1-0 win despite having 22 shots.
