Luis ‘Matador’ Hernández has claimed his refusal to cut his hair prevented him representing Chivas during his illustrious career.

His 35 goals for El Tri sees him tied with Carlos Hermosillo in fourth on the list of all-time scorers for Mexico.

The now 52-year-old, whose trademark flowing locks where central to his image, also averaged just over a goal every three games at club level.

But it seems it was his grooming methods that scuppered a move to the Flock in the late 1990s.

“At that time, I accepted without problems, but they wanted a condition and he told me: ‘The president of Chivas (Salvador Martínez Garza at that time) wants you to cut your hair.’

“I told him ‘fuck his mother,'” Hernández said on his official TikTok account (via RÉCORD).

“For that reason, I did not accept to go to Chivas.

“You always have to respect the person first and here I did not feel it.

“That is why I declined to the Birrias of Guadalajara and that made me later come to Tigres after the 1998 World Cup, then to the LA Galaxy and then to the glorious Eagles of América.”

If true, it seems a rather ludicrous reason to miss out a player who outgunned Brazil’s Ronaldo to top the scoring charts at the 1997 Copa América.
