Egan-Riley joins Burnley | OneFootball

CJ Egan-Riley has completed a permanent transfer to Burnley following the expiration of his contract with Manchester City.

The Academy graduate joins the Championship outfit after spending more than 10-years at City, where he progressed through the youth ranks to make three first-team appearances.

After impressing for the Under-18s and Elite Development Squad (EDS), Egan-Riley was promoted to Pep Guardiola’s senior side ahead of the 2021/22 season and made his debut in a 6-1 Carabao Cup third-round victory over Wycombe Wanderers last September.

The 19-year-old completed the full 90 minutes at right-back and did the same the following March as he made his Champions League bow in a 0-0 draw at home to Sporting in the second leg of our last 16 encounter.

Egan-Riley made his third and final appearance as a late substitute in a 5-0 win over Newcastle United in May and ended the campaign as a Premier League winner as Guardiola’s side clinched a fourth title in five seasons.

The versatile defender has also been a key figure in what has been a hugely successful period for the Academy in recent years.

In 2019/20, he played 16 times as the Under-18s won the Under-18 Premier League North and the corresponding National Title, before helping Carlos Vicens’ side end the Club’s 12-year wait to win the FA Youth Cup as he played the entire 90 minutes in a 3-2 victory over Chelsea at St George’s Park.

The following campaign, Egan-Riley made 14 appearances as the EDS won the Premier League 2 for the first time and, last season, he captained the team to back-to-back titles under the tutelage of Brian Barry-Murphy.

His move to Burnley sees him link up with legendary former City captain Vincent Kompany, who was appointed Clarets boss last month.
