Huddersfield Town welcomed Blackburn Rovers to The John Smith’s Stadium on Matchday 10 of the 2021/22 EFL Championship season. The home team picked up a 3-2 victory in an exciting game which saw Huddersfield Town come up to seventh in the Championship standings, level on points with sixth-placed Blackburn Rovers. Ben Brereton-Diaz scored a second-half brace for the visitors, while Alex Vallejo score one and Danny Ward scored a brace for the hosts.

Carlos Corberan lined up the home side in a 3-4-2-1 formation with Danny Ward leading the line from upfront. He was supported by two attacking midfielders Danel Sinani and Joshua Koroma, with Alejandro Vallejo and Lewis O’Brien playing as the two holding midfielders. The defensive line of five included left wing-back Harry Toffolo, centre-backs Tom Lees, Naby Sarr and Mathew Pearson with Lee Nicholls between the sticks. The average positions of the Huddersfield Town players show that they kept good shape during the match, with the attacking players positioned in the opposition half and the defensive player in their own half. The wing-backs provided the width in attack when needed.0Tony Tone Mowbray lined up the Blackburn Rovers side in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Thomas Kaminski in goal behind a defensive back four including left-back Harry Pickering, centre-backs Daniel Ayala and Hayden Carter and right-back Ryan Nyambe. Lewis Travis and Joe Rothwell started as the two holding midfielders behind the attacking midfield trio of Sam Gallagher on the right, John Buckley through the middle and Ben Brereton on the left. Tyrhys Dolan started as the lone striker upfront.

The average positions of the visitors show that they had most players’ average position around the halfway line of the field, with the full-backs not attacking as much, and the attackers staying in the opponent’s half. Huddersfield Town created an xG of 2.05 in the match, as they took a total of 12 shots on target, hitting the target eight times and scoring three goals. The Rovers, on the other hand, took 13 shots in the game, but hit the target only thrice, scoring two goals. They created an xG of 1.90 as both teams had 50% possession each in the game. Ben Brereton had the highest individual xG of 1.48 in the match, followed by Danny Ward, who had an xG of 1.08, which was the highest among the Rovers. Brereton Diaz took a total of five shots in the game, while Joe Rothwell had 17 passes in the final third. Huddersfield Town’s shot map shows that they took most of their shot from inside the penalty box, also scoring two of their goals from close range and one from outside the box. They hit the target eight times, scoring three goals to win 3-2. Blackburn Rovers’ shot map shows that they took a total of 12 shots in the game, but hit the target only thrice to score two goals. They took shots from close as well as long-range, but scored both goals from inside the box. The xT generation timeline of the match shows that both teams had few opportunities in the first half, wit8h the home team creating some xT. In the second half, the home created many more opportunities and threats compared to the visitors. The xG timeline of the match shows the increase in xG for both teams over the course of the match.

The home team’s pass matrix show that they had a decent number of passes in the match. Tom Lee’s attempted and received the highest number of passes for Huddersfield with 56 and 44 passes respectively. Naby Sarr also attempted 54 passes, while receiving 36.

The visitors’ pass matrix show that they had a decent number of passes to show for their 50% possession in the match. Joe Rothwell and John Buckley both attempted 59 passes in the match, with Rothwell also receiving the most passes with 48.

The passing zones for Huddersfield Town show that they had most of their passes completed on the left side of midfield and defence, as they also attempted putting in a lot of crosses into the box. Sorba Thomas put in five crosses into the box, while Harry Toffolo put in six passes into the opposition box.

The passing zones of Blackburn Rovers show that they had most of their passes on the left side of midfield and left side of the attacking third. They put in a lot of crosses as well, with John Buckley putting in seven crosses and nine passes into the box.

The xT creation zines of the Terriers show that they created a decent amount of opportunities and xT in and around the opposition box. Harry Toffolo had the highest xT creation from his passing for them. Other than Toffolo, Josh Korona and Lewis O’Brien also created decent xT from passing. O’Brien also had the highest xT generation from dribbling.

The xT creation zones of the Rovers show that they created a lot of threats and opportunities in the attacking third with Joe Rothwell creating the highest xT(expected threat) from passing for them.

Other than Rothwell, John Buckley and Lewis Travis also had decent xT creation from passing. Brereton Diaz had the highest xT generation from dribbling for the visitors.

The home team had to contest in a lot of defensive duels in the match, especially in their defensive third. Tom Lees won three defensive duels for them.

There were a few aerial duels contested in the match all over the field, as Tom Lees, Harry Toffolo, Danny Ward and Lewis O’Brien all won three aerial duels each for the Terriers.

The Terriers contested in a lot of loose ball duels in the match, winning a lot of them. Matty Pearson, Toffolo and Danny Ward all made three successful loose ball recoveries for them.

There were a lot of defensive duels contested in the match by The Rovers, especially in their own defensive third. John Buckley won two, with a lot of other players winning one defensive duel each.

The Rovers contested a few aerial duels in the match all over the field, as Daniel Ayala made ten loose ball recoveries for them in the match, followed by Gallagher’s four.

The visitors contested a few loose balls in the match, mostly in the attacking half of the field. Rothwell and Brereton made two loose ball recoveries each for Blackburn Rovers.

The victory has taken The Terriers up to seventh in the Championship standings, level of points with the Rovers who are now at sixth. Both teams are expected to compete for the top six spots and play the promotion playoffs, as the season moves forward into an interesting period.
