Championship

Moment of the weekend

A win, at last.

At the fifth time of asking, Birmingham finally won a game under Wayne Rooney.

The new Blues boss admitted after the game that he was furious with his players at half time for going into the break level.

Juninho Bacuna had bagged the equaliser in the third minute of first half stoppage after George Myers had scored for Sheffield Wednesday in the 44th minute.

After the hairdryer treatment, the midlands club came out with more purpose in the second half and eventually got a winner with nine minutes to go through boy wonder Jordan James.

It means Birmingham are now up to 14th place with Wednesday firmly rooted at the bottom of the table.

Notable mentions: West Brom claim statement win against Ipswich; Plymouth impress in Sunderland victory; Cardiff score twice in injury time

Player of the weekend

Liam Manning claimed his first win as Bristol City boss this weekend as the Robins came out on top in a five-goal thriller at Ashton Gate.

Middlesbrough were the opponents as Manning introduced himself to the home crowd after his move from Oxford earlier in the month.

It was real end-to-end stuff but Mark Sykes proved the match-winner in the 67th minute with a neat finish.

The Irish winger was a constant threat throughout the afternoon with his electric pace and eye for a pass.

Notable mentions: Adam Moran (Blackburn); Gady Diangana (West Brom); Ike Ugbo (Cardiff)

League One

Moment of the weekend

Bolton were at their imperious best this weekend as they capitalised on defeats by Portsmouth and Oxford to go top of League One.

The former Premier League side have been in sensational form of late but reserved their best win of the season so far for their clash with Exeter on Saturday.

The Grecians never stood a chance as Bolton scored on 34 minutes through Jack Iredale and then never let up.

In the end the Lancashire side won 7-0 with the pick of the bunch coming from Paris Maghoma.

Notable mentions: Bolton put four past Pompey; Reading get local bragging rights over Wycombe; Cheltenham shock Oxford

Player of the weekend

Going into this weekend, Cheltenham were firmly rooted in the League One relegation places and had won just two games all term.

Oxford meanwhile had started like a train, winning 11 of their 16 matches and welcomed home town boy Des Buckingham as the new boss.

The Yellows struggled to find their rhythm from the off and went a goal down on 35 minutes through Rob Street but it was fellow striker Will Goodwin who really impressed throughout the 90 minutes.

Goodwin stretched the Oxford defensive line with his smart movement and rounded off a great afternoon with a goal in the dying moments to complete a 2-0 win.

Notable mentions: Dion Charles (Bolton); Corey Blackford-Taylor (Charlton); CJ Hamilton (Blackpool)

League Two

Moment of the weekend

Before this weekend Stockport had gone 13 League Two games unbeaten.

It was a club record and firmly cemented their spot at the top of the division as the likes of Notts County and Wrexham stayed inconsistent.

Newport meanwhile had been up and down all campaign, going one step forward and two steps back since August.

Naturally then, the Welsh side completed arguably the shock of the season so far, beating Dave Challinor’s side 2-1 at Rodney Parade.

It was a brilliant, back-to-the-walls display interspersed with two moments of class in front of goal.

Notable mentions: Wrexham hammer Morecambe; AFC Wimbledon stun Notts County; Barrow’s brilliant run continues

Player of the weekend

Paul Mullin’s ascension to potential international footballer continues at pace.

Mullin has revealed his desire to play for Wales in the future with boss Rob Page admitting that it could be hard to turn down the striker if he keeps scoring goals in League Two.

The 29-year-old scored three times this past weekend as Wrexham beat Morecambe 6-0 at the Racecourse Ground.

All three showed Mullin’s striking instinct and penalty box awareness, but it was the hat-trick goal that was on another level.

A touch to beat two defenders, pace to get around the back and then a finish with his weak foot into the far corner.

Notable mentions: Ali Al Hamadi (AFC Wimbledon); Rob Apter (Tranmere); Kian Spence (Barrow)
