Leicester City could be dealt a devastating blow in their quest to return to the Premier League as a result of breaching PSR rules.
Leicester City could be in for a huge setback in their chase to return to the Premier League as a result of their breach of Premier League financial rules.
Leicester were relegated back to the Championship in 19th place in the Premier League at the end of the 2024-25 season, and have been heavily linked with Russell Martin as a replacement for outgoing manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy, although his appointment hasn't yet been confirmed.
But Martin could have an uphill battle on his hands to get Leicester back into the Premier League as a result of the club's previous overspending.
The Independent's Matt Hughes has reported that Leicester face being docked a minimum of 12 points in the Championship next season if the club are found guilty of breaching Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
The charges brought related to an alleged overspend of over £17 million for the three-year reporting cycle between 2021 and 2024, with the matter having been complicated by the fact that Leicester were members of both the Premier League and the EFL during this time.
Current EFL rules state that 12 points should be docked for a PSR breach, with deductions applied on a sliding scale if the breach is less than £15m.
But as the alleged breach concerns more than this amount, a reduction seems unlikely, though clubs have previously been able to get points deductions lowered on appeal. Leicester won one themselves just last year.
And it gets worse. T
he Premier League are also pressing for a bigger deduction than this, because Leicester have also been charged with not supplying their annual accounts to the Premier League by the 31st December 2024 and failing to provide full, complete and prompt assistance in response to their inquiries.
12 points could well turn out to be the minimum number of points they're docked.
Such a deduction could have a huge impact upon Leicester as they seek to rebuild, following their disastrous season back in the Premier League.
Russell Martin has been in pole position to become the club's next manager, but if agreement is reached with the former Southampton boss, he could be at a considerable disadvantage compared to the other clubs chasing a place back in the top flight.
Martin has previous experience of getting recently clubs promoted back into the Premier League. He was in charge at Southampton during the 2023/24 season, taking them on a 25-game unbeaten run which lasted from September until February, and he ended it by taking them back up through the play-offs after beating Leeds United in the final at Wembley.
But with no announcement having yet been made, fans will fear that such news could affect his decision to join the club. Leicester City's summer could be about to get much more difficult indeed.
