The Football League served up its usual helping of brilliant goals and astonishing late drama this weekend.

Here are our highlights.

Championship

Moment of the weekend

The East Anglia derby is always one of the fiercest in English football but this weekend it meant more than most.

Ipswich have been in the automatic promotion places all season long but a recent dip in form has seen Leeds challenge the Tractor Boys for a place in the Premier League next term.

With Norwich also trying to make a late run to the play-off places, Saturday’s early kick off was full to the brim with expectation.

In the end though, despite a Colosseum-esque crowd, the Canaries ran out 1-0 winners in a fairly drab game.

That win for Norwich now puts them into sixth place whilst Ipswich actually stayed in second thanks to Leeds’ defeat at Coventry.

Notable mentions: Plymouth win six-pointer at Rotherham; Wednesday do the same at QPR; Coventry stun Leeds

The race for the play-offs this season is, as ever, offering up some brilliant entertainment in the dying weeks of the campaign.

This time around that final sixth spot is being fought out between West Brom, Norwich, Coventry and, although a relatively long shot, Middlesbrough and Hull.

The biggest winners this weekend were Cov who beat Leeds 2-1 thanks to a pair of excellent goals from Haji Wright and Ellis Simms.

It was midfielder Josh Eccles who impressed most though with the 24-year-old laying on a brilliant assist for Wright to secure the three points.

Notable mentions: Fåbio Carvalho (Hull); Dan Scarr (Plymouth); Josh Clarke (Sunderland)

League One

Moment of the weekend

The Nathan Jones revolution is already bearing some fruit at Charlton.

The former Luton and Southampton boss became something of a punchline during his brief spell in the Premier League with Southampton.

But the Welsh tactician has bounced back at The Valley with the south London improving hugely during his first two months in charge.

The Addicks produced their best win of the campaign so far on Saturday as they beat promotion-chasing Barnsley 2-1 thanks to Alfie May’s double.

Charlton are now up to 16th and will almost certainly be staying in League One next term.

Notable mentions: Portsmouth put one hand on the title with win; Oxford net four again; Bolton go one point behind second-place Derby

Player of the weekend

Mark Harris has arguably been one of the signings of the season in League One with the Oxford striker bagging 13 goals in his first campaign for the club.

Two of those came this weekend as Des Buckingham’s side travelled to Burton looking for the three points that would keep them in the hunt for the last remaining play-off place.

And that’s exactly what they did as the Yellows ran out comfortable 4-0 winners with Harris netting either side of half time.

With Lincoln drawing at Reading, the Kassam Stadium club are now up to sixth place with a crunch game against the Imps in eight days time.

Notable mentions: Alfie May (Charlton); Karamoko Dembélé (Blackpool); Nathan Baxter (Bolton)

League Two

Moment of the weekend

Could Doncaster make an unlikely late run to the play-offs come May?

It may be a little too late for Donny but Grant McCann’s side have gone from relegation candidates to potential top six finishers in the space of two months.

The Yorkshire club extended their winning run to six straight games this weekend as they beat Morecambe 3-0 thanks, in large part, to a first half double from Luke Molyneux.

Rovers are now nine points off Crewe in the last remaining play-off place with four games to go.

Unlikely
 but not impossible.

Notable mentions: AFC Wimbledon beat nine-man Salford; Stockport put one hand on the title; Grimsby go clear at the bottom with Newport win

Player of the weekend

Paul Mullin reached a stunning century this weekend for Wrexham with the League Two goal-getter netting his 100th for the club in just 129 games.

More importantly for the Welsh side though was the win away at relegation-threatened Colchester.

Wrexham had gone 1-0 down to the Essex side but that header from Mullin and then an 85th minute strike from Max Cleworth ensured a vital victory at the top of League Two.

Phil Parkinson’s side stay in second place, two points ahead of MK Dons with four games of the season remaining.

Notable mentions: Paddy Madden (Stockport); Omar Bugiel (AFC Wimbledon); Dan Crowley (Notts County)
