Sheffield United have made a formal offer to out of contract striker Oli McBurnie, but they're not the only club interested in acquiring his services.
Sheffield United have made a formal offer to striker Oli McBurnie and are awaiting his response, amid interest from Ipswich Town, Hull City and Swansea City.
Sheffield United need further attacking options ahead of the new season and have settled on trying to reunite with former striker Oli McBurnie, who's a free agent after the cancellation of his contract with the Spanish club Las Palmas at the end of the 2024-25 season.
The Blades have already lost two strikers since the end of last season, with Ben Brereton-Diaz having returned to Southampton at the end of his loan spell with the club and having failed to agree terms with Rhian Brewster, who's agreed to move to Derby County, whilst Kieffer Moore is also set to join Wrexham.
The Sheffield Star report that Sheffield United have made an offer of a contract to Oli McBurnie, and are currently awaiting his response.
But it's by no means guaranteed that the 29-year-old striker ends up back at Bramall Lane.
A number of other Championship clubs, including Ipswich Town, Hull City and Swansea City, are also chasing his signature and may end up making offers for him too.
The Kieffer Moore situation makes the situation all the more important for Sheffield United.
The start of the new Championship season is only a few days away and the Blades cannot afford to be short of attacking options for their first game of the season against Bristol City on the 9 August.
Sheffield United only narrowly missed out on promotion at the end of the 2024-25 season, fading away in a three-way race for two automatic promotion places with Burnley and Leeds United, before losing in the Championship play-off final to Sunderland.
With the Championship looking competitive for the new season, substantial changes have already been made behind the scenes at Bramall Lane, with manager Chris Wilder having been replaced by Ruben Selles in June.
But they do look thin on the ground in attack, with two of last season's forwards having already left the club and a third set to leave.
McBurnie could be the perfect solution for Selles. In 2019 he became the club's record transfer fee paid when they stumped up £20 million to Swansea City for him, and he stayed at Bramall Lane for five years before releasing him in 2024.
McBurnie signed for the Spanish club Las Palmas last summer and spent a season in Spain, but he couldn't prevent his new club from relegation.
His contract was terminated by mutual agreement, and he now looks set for a return to English football. He's an experienced striker at this level of the game, and with five years at Bramall Lane under his belt, he certainly knows the club.
But all Sheffield United can do now is play a waiting game while McBurnie decides whether he wants to return to the club, or whether he fancies taking his chances elsewhere.
