It’s crunch time in lower-league football as fans brace up for the heavily expected English Football League play-offs across the Championship, League One and League Two.

While Arsenal and Manchester City remain engaged in one of the most heart-stirring title races in Premier League history, lower-tier competitions are gearing up for an electrifying post-season drama.

This past weekend served to drop the curtain on the regular Championship season, with Leicester City claiming the title, courtesy of a one-point lead on second-placed Ipswich Town.

Enzo Maresca’s side secured a swift return to the top flight, accompanied by the Tractor Boys, who last dined at England’s top table at the start of the 21st century.

One promotion spot is up for grabs, with four sides ranked third to sixth in the Championship table embroiled in a high-stakes battle to claim a place in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium.

The first set of semi-final first legs comes on May 12 as Norwich City and Leeds United go head-to-head in the first last-four tie before West Bromwich Albion take on Southampton later that day.

A quick turnaround awaits the semi-final contenders, with the second-leg showdowns scheduled for May 16 and 17.

Wembley will host the final on Sunday, May 26.

League One play-off schedule

As we move down the ladder, attention turns to League One, where Portsmouth and Derby County reigned supreme during the regular season to ensure automatic Championship promotion.

One of Bolton Wanderers, Peterborough United, Oxford United and Barnsley will join them in England’s second-tier competition through the play-offs.

After missing out on a second-place finish in the League One standings by five points, Bolton thumped sixth-placed Barnsley 3-1 in the first leg of their semi-final tie to put one foot in the final.

Oxford got the better of Peterborough in the other semi-final first leg and are one step away from booking a final date against the Trotters.

League Two play-off schedule

Unlike the two higher divisions, the three best-ranked sides in the League Two table earned automatic promotion to England’s third-tier competition.

In addition to table-topping Stockport County, Wrexham strolled to a runner-up finish in their first Football League season in 15 years, while Mansfield Town settled for third place.

Originally scheduled for Monday, May 6, the first semi-final tie between Crawley Town and Milton Keynes Dons has been postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

That means the second leg at MK Dons will also be pushed back, causing schedule mayhem, with the play-off final planned for May 19.

Whoever emerges victorious from this tie will face the winner of the other semi-final showdown between Doncaster Rovers and Crewe Alexandra.

This tie will resume as expected, with Doncaster hosting the first leg at the Eco-Power Stadium on Monday before travelling to Gresty Road for a rematch on Friday.
