Southampton heaped more pressure on Aston Villa boss Dean Smith as they won 1-0 thanks to an early Adam Armstrong goal.

Saints flew out of the blocks and took the lead inside the opening three minutes.

A long ball was knocked down by Che Adams was met by Adam Armstrong who hit a superb hall volley from the edge of the area past Emi Martinez.

Villa struggled to create any meaningful chances in the first half with manager Dean Smith looking exasperated on the sideline.

After the break the hosts were again on the front foot and almost doubled their lead on the hour mark as James Ward-Prowse whipped in a couple of dangerous free kicks.

Villa pushed for the equaliser but couldn’t find it as the south coast side moved up to 12th in the table.
