As the summer transfer window opens and Rangers fans brace themselves for a busy few months of speculation arrivals and exits the storylines just keep coming. With uncertainty over a number of Ibrox stars and the usual chatter about potential targets the spotlight has now landed squarely on one player who divides opinion among the fanbase. The Belgian midfielder at the centre of this particular narrative has once again stirred conversation following new developments off the pitch.

Nico Raskin appears to have a new deal on the table at Ibrox after team mate Dujon Sterling let slip online that Rangers have formally offered him a contract extension. In a surprising but not unintentional comment Sterling effectively confirmed what many suspected — that Philippe Clement’s replacement Russell Martin is keen to keep the Belgian international in Govan beyond his current deal. Whether Raskin accepts is an entirely different question.

The midfielder was recently linked with a £25 million move to Aston Villa with Serie A’s Fiorentina also reportedly monitoring his situation. But this latest update suggests Rangers are doing what they can to retain his services even though Raskin himself has publicly admitted in the past that the club is a stepping stone in his career path. That sort of attitude does not typically go down well with the Ibrox support who expect loyalty and total commitment from their players especially if they are to be considered for leadership roles in the squad.

It has not gone unnoticed either that Raskin’s form dipped significantly during the season raising doubts over whether he even deserves an improved offer. That said when he is at his best he is certainly a top class midfielder with technical quality and defensive energy. The question is whether Rangers are offering him this new deal out of ambition or out of fear of losing yet another asset without securing a proper fee.

As one outlet recently confirmed Raskin has been considering his options with eyes on England and beyond. If Sterling’s comment is anything to go by though Rangers have not given up hope of convincing him to stay.
