After years of development abroad, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens has finally landed in the Premier League, with Chelsea securing the 20-year-old winger.
Born in London on 8 August 2004, Bynoe-Gittens is a product of English football’s academy system. He started out at Reading, showing promise early on before a brief stint at Chelsea’s youth setup. However, after just six months in west London, he returned to Reading, where he spent the next six years developing his craft.
In his mid-teens, Manchester City came calling, and Bynoe-Gittens made the move north to join their academy. But the real turning point came in 2020, when he opted for a bold move abroad, joining Borussia Dortmund’s U19 side in Germany.
His rise through the ranks at Dortmund was swift. He made his senior debut in April 2022 against Wolfsburg and, by the 2022/23 season, had become a regular figure in the first-team squad. This past campaign was his most productive yet, scoring 12 goals and providing three assists across 48 appearances in all competitions.
Bynoe-Gittens’ tally of 12 goals last season ranks him joint-second for goals scored by players aged 21 or under across Europe’s top five leagues and UEFA competitions.
Only Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal scored more with 14. Bynoe-Gittens shares second place with Rayan Cherki of Lyon and Lucas Stassin of Westerlo, while the likes of Désiré Doué and Malick Fofana followed closely behind with 11 apiece.
The Blues ultimately won the race for his signature, paying Borussia Dortmund a fee of £48.5 million. It’s a record-breaking sum - the highest fee ever paid for an English player who has yet to be capped at senior level for England.
Bynoe-Gittens is a classic modern winger: quick, fearless in one-v-one situations, and capable of turning a game on its head. Last season in the Bundesliga, only Florian Wirtz completed more successful dribbles (82) than Bynoe-Gittens, who finished with 77, highlighting just how dangerous he is with the ball at his feet.
Technically gifted and attack-minded, the young Englishman excels in progressive carries, shooting, and taking defenders on. While there's room to grow in areas like passing accuracy and defensive contributions, his attacking output makes him one of the most exciting prospects in European football.
During the 2024/25 campaign under Nuri Sahin, Dortmund typically lined up in either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, with Bynoe-Gittens operating wide on the left, often stretching play and providing directness in transition.
His return to Chelsea marks not just a homecoming, but also a major statement of intent from the Blues—bringing in one of England’s most promising young talents, already proven on a major European stage.
