French media and PSG fans have criticised Gigio Donnarumma after a 2-1 Champions League loss against Atletico Madrid, but his struggles in Paris have not been reflected in his performances with the Azzurri.

Since joining PSG from Milan in 2021, Donnarumma hasn’t had an easy journey.

Even though the Italian keeper has won several trophies in Paris, fans and media often criticised his performances. The same happened on Wednesday, when his PSG side lost 2-1 to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, leaving them 25th in the table.

The ex-Milan star was blamed for Atletico Madrid’s late winner and, as reported by Corriere della Sera, Gigio was rated 3/10 by L’Equipe and branded as ‘the invisible hand.’

Donnarumma had been benched in the previous Ligue 1 fixture, seeing Matvey Safonov start between the PSG sticks.

Although the Italian keeper is going through a tough time again in Paris, his performances with Italy’s national team have been outstanding, especially under Luciano Spalletti.

Gigio was arguably Italy’s best player at the Euros last summer and has been the Azzurri captain in his latest 13 international appearances.

As reported by Sofascore, Gigio has averaged 1.7 saves per game in three Nations League appearances this season. He has even more with PSG in Ligue 1 games this term, 2.4 per game.

Donnarumma’s Italy will meet France at San Siro on November 17. Italy CT Luciano Spalletti will name his team for the November break later today.
