Sheffield Wednesday defender Dominic Iorfa has insisted that he is happy at the club, and wants to play with them in the Premier League.

Iorfa joined Wednesday from Wolves back in January 2019, and has since gone on to make 88 appearances in all competitions for the Owls, scoring five goals.

Having signed a new deal with the club in the summer that secures his future with the Owls until the end of next season, Iorfa, when discussing his situation with the club, told The Sheffield Star: “I’ll be honest, I just want to play football. I’m just happy I’m back after the 18 months I’ve had, I’m tied down here, I want to play football and I’m happy here.

“That’s all I’m focused on, just staying fit and playing as many games as I can. I haven’t even thought of anything else. I’ve only just come back now.

“It’s all about trying to get back into the team, cementing my place and going from there.”

Prior to his move to Wednesday, Iorfa had been unable to get the chance to prove himself in the Premier League with Wolves, something he is seemingly now keen to do with his current club.

Discussing the prospect of playing in English football’s top-flight at some point in his career, the 26-year-old added: “I think any player needs ambition really and of course I want to play at the highest level.

“Hopefully it’s with us, hopefully it’s with Sheffield Wednesday, but that’s my long-term goal. Ever since I’ve started playing football I’ve wanted to play in the top flight and that will never change.

“I have to focus on performing week-in, week-out and everything around that will take care of itself.”

Following their relegation from the Championship at the end of last season, Sheffield Wednesday currently sit seventh in the League One table, one point adrift of the play-off places.

The Verdict

These comments from Iorfa will no doubt be a welcome sight for anyone of a Sheffield Wednesday persuasion.

Ever since he joined the club, the defender has been a solid and dependable part of the Owls’ backline when he is fit and available.

As a result, keeping him at Hillsborough long term would certainly feel like a big boost for Wednesday, and one that would be another statement of intent given his ability.

Indeed, given Wednesday are currently two promotion from the top-flight, and Iorfa has just one season remaining on his contract at Hillsborough, he would need to sign a new deal to play with the club in the Premier League, so it will be interesting to see if that is an agreement that can be reached.
