A look at the Manchester City squad does indicate that City’s rebuild is set to commence next summer. City’s defence could be one area where they look to regenerate next summer. Injuries to Ruben Dias, John Stones, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji this season have cost Pep Guardiola’s side. There is also a case for the champions to sign a centre-back in the January transfer window.
But looking ahead to next summer do the world champions already have their next centre-back on their books? A young defender has impressed in the Championship this season and looks to be a player that Pep Guardiola’s squad could use in the future. That player is Callum Doyle.
Callum Doyle has had an impressive season to date for Norwich City. His play for the Canaries has been outstanding so far this season. He looks to be every bit a modern-day defender. There are shades of Josko Gvardiol in his game. Doyle is strong in a challenge, his defensive positioning is excellent and he has more than held his own physically in the Championship this season. He is adept at intercepting and breaking up opponents’ attacking play. The ability of Doyle to read the game and snuff out any danger is a key asset to his game.
But in possession, the young defender has become an attacking weapon for Norwich City. So far this season, across 20 appearances, Doyle has scored one goal and added 5 assists. The young Manchester City defender has played primarily at left-back for the Canaries this season. Although he has also stepped in at centre-back. But Doyle’s calmness in possession stands out. His ability to pick out a pass and carry the ball is Gvardiol-like at times. As the season has progressed Doyle’s game has developed as he plays regularly with Norwich City. If he continues his strong season he may play his into Pep Guardiola’s first team set up for next season.
If Doyle could play his way into Pep Guardiola’s set up next season it would be a huge bonus for Manchester City. If Doyle is deemed good enough to cut it at City the champions wouldn’t have to fork out a sizable fee on a defender. Callum Doyle is already on City’s books.
He is already adept at playing under Pep Guardiola’s philosophy. His progress through City’s academy has ensured this. His loans spells have added an edge to his game. If he were to return to Manchester City next season the champions would be adding a young defender who would now be a seasoned professional. That would also be welcome news for Pep Guardiola’s side.
The case is mounting for Callum Doyle to step into Pep Guardiola’s squad next season. If he can continue his strong form for Norwich for the remainder of the season Doyle will almost certainly play his way into the fold at Manchester City. His talent is clear to see and he looks to be the perfect young defender to step into City’s defence for next season and beyond.
