Dimitri Payet is firmly in the ‘streets won’t forget’ category when it comes to Premier League players.

The Frenchman only spent a season-and-a-half on English shores, but in that time he delivered a plethora of magical moments.

During the 2015/16 season with West Ham United, Payet was electrifying and rightly received a spot in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.

Payet was the primary reason the Hammers finished seventh, ahead of both Liverpool and Chelsea.

The crafty playmaker scored nine goals and assisted a further 12 in his 30 Premier League outings that season.

And one of his nine goals still makes our jaws plummet to the floor when we rewatch footage of it.

We’re, of course, talking about Payet’s physics-defying free-kick at Upton Park against Crystal Palace.

How the 35-year-old managed to get the ball to dip beneath the crossbar when it looked like it was heading straight into the crowd was quite extraordinary.

The television footage of the goal was magnificent – and a video captured by a fan from the stands is even better.

They couldn’t have caught the snippet of genius from a more perfect angle, could they?

Aside from the advertising boards having a bit of a meltdown, the footage of the goal is quite simply perfect.

The sight of Wayne Hennessey looking on helplessly as the ball soars over him and into the back of his net is just glorious.

Like everyone else, the Welsh goalkeeper expected Payet to aim for the left-hand side of the goal, rather than the right.

Where is Payet now?

Payet left West Ham in January 2017 under slightly controversial circumstances and rejoined Marseille.

He’s been pretty good since returning to France and his numbers this season are hugely impressive.

Payet has 16 goals and 11 assists to his name across all competitions, which isn’t bad for a player who is now 35 years of age.

And his strike against PAOK in the Europa Conference League was almost as good as the aforementioned goal against Palace…

There really is magic in that wand of a right peg.
