Speaking after France’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of Germany on Tuesday, Didier Deschamps revealed that Kylian Mbappé (24) didn’t feature due to a knee injury.

Deschamps made six changes to the side that beat the Republic of Ireland 2-0 last Thursday. Mbappé was perhaps the most surprising omission, however, Deschamps revealed the reason in a post-match interview, transcribed by L’Équipe. “Kylian had a problem with the patellar tendon, which is bothering him. If he couldn’t start, he shouldn’t have been brought on either,” said Les Bleus’ manager.

Mbappé’s absence is untimely. Paris Saint-Germain face OGC Nice on Friday night at the Parc des Princes before facing Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. Les Parisiens then face Olympique de Marseille in Le Classique the following weekend. It is unclear whether the France captain’s participation in any of the aforementioned matches is in question, however, Deschamps did add that the injury, which was suffered in training on Monday, “wasn’t serious.”

Mbappé missed PSG’s Ligue 1 opener against FC Lorient due to a standoff regarding his contractual situation, which is still to be properly resolved. However, he has played in the last three games, demonstrating once again his importance by scoring five goals.
