Didier Deschamps pushes Olivier Giroud closer to Chelsea exit
France manager Didier Deschamps has intimated that Olivier Giroud may need to leave Chelsea in January to stay in contention for Euro 2020.
Giroud has fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge with Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi ahead of him in the pecking order.
He wasn’t even named on the bench for the 1-0 defeat at home to struggling Bournemouth on Saturday.
With the former Arsenal hitman struggling to get game time under Blues boss Frank Lampard, Deschamps hinted that a move during the January transfer would be in the 33-year-old’s best interests.
“Olivier Giroud, like others, may have to move,” L’Equipe reported Deschamps as saying.
“His situation at Chelsea has not changed for two months. It would be better for him, of course, to go to a club where he will have more playing time.
“If he cannot have this playing time at Chelsea, the idea is to be able to have it elsewhere.
“It will be his decision. But I don’t know the solutions he has, the possibilities he has to have more playing time.”
With Chelsea having had their season-long transfer ban cut in half, the Blues will now be able to bring in players during the January window.
With the recent change in circumstances, Lampard may well be prepared to let a striker who he clearly doesn’t fancy move on.
