Olivier Giroud’s (37) time in Europe is coming to an end. After a glittering career, which has taken him from Montpellier HSC to Arsenal, Chelsea and AC Milan, France’s all-time top-scorer is set to exit the European season at the end of the season.

Giroud’s contract at AC Milan expires at the end of the season and widespread reports suggest that the Frenchman is set to join former Les Bleus teammate Hugo Lloris at Los Angeles FC. Whilst the move has not yet been made official, Didier Deschamps has seemingly confirmed the impending transfer during an interview with the AFP on Wednesday.

“Olivier has made a sporting choice and a life choice,” began the France manager, who is likely to put his faith in Giroud again at this summer’s Euros in Germany. “Despite his age and his experience, he still has this burning fire within him. It (the transfer to LAFC) is perhaps an opportunity too, beyond reuniting with Hugo (Lloris) and his family,” added Deschamps.

He then went on to speculate the motivation behind Giroud’s seemingly impending move to the MLS. “He wants to continue his career but with fewer expectations than in Europe but that doesn’t change my choices in the short-term because he is still at AC Milan until the end of the season,” said Deschamps.

His comments suggest that, beyond Euro 2024, Giroud may no longer be considered for international selection. The striker has himself alluded to announcing his international retirement after this summer’s tournament in Germany.
