Arsenal are set to confirm the signing of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad imminently.
The North London side have agreed a deal to sign the Spain international, who is set to become the club’s second signing of the summer. Despite rumours of rival interest from Real Madrid, Arsenal’s move for Zubimendi was agreed earlier this year and will be finalised without problem.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed the details of the deal. Arsenal have agreed to pay a fee that is ‘slightly more’ than the midfielder’s €60m (£51.2m) release clause at Sociedad, as part of the pact to secure Zubimendi’s transfer.
However, the transfer fee will be paid in a series of instalments with Romano revealing the ‘excellent relationship’ between the two clubs has helped facilitate the deal. Last summer, Arsenal signed Mikel Merino from the Spanish side. Romano has confirmed the deal for Zubimendi will proceed as planned.
Zubimendi turned down a transfer to Liverpool last summer in favour of remaining in San Sebastien but is now ready for a new challenge.
He will arrive at the Emirates having ranked among the top 10 players in La Liga last season for progressive passes and successful take-on percentage.
Zubimendi’s arrival is a welcome boost for Arsenal, who have seen contract talks with Thomas Partey stall. The Ghana international is out of contract later this month and could leave as a free agent.
