Ruud van Nistelrooy made a great start to life as Manchester United interim boss on Wednesday night, as his side beat Leicester City 5-2 in the EFL Cup.
Casemiro opened the scoring with an excellent effort from distance after fifteen minutes of play, before Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes added to a commanding first-half scoreline. The Brazilian holding midfielder then grabbed another ahead of the break. Conor Coady and Bilal El Khannouss struck either side of the interval for the visitors, yet this rejuvenated United were ultimately too strong.
Speaking after the game, the former PSV youth and senior coach was full of praise for his players, and Casemiro especially:
“I was delighted for Casemiro. The way he has been training and helping the team, he’s such an example, we are delighted to have him around. He was almost blamed for the Liverpool game. It is not fair, totally not true. He is an example for us.”
Addressing the wider squad, the once-prolific forward remarked on United’s recent inability to score:
“Five goals but I have to say the chances against West Ham, Fenerbahce and Crystal Palace, we created so much more bigger chances and couldn’t finish.
“All of a sudden we had some luck on our side and that made it a great night. It is always the target to react and go straight back into attack ourselves.
“But I have to say the reaction of players after the Leicester goals were excellent and they deserve the credit. I am glad the crowd go home with a nice night of football.”
