Despite leaving West Ham this summer for Arsenal in a British player record transfer move, Declan Rice has said he still has a deep connection with his former club and keeps in touch with many players, staff and David Moyes.

Speaking to Channel 4 prior to England’s 1-1 draw with Ukraine last night, in which Rice played the full 90 minutes, the £105m man said: “I really can’t explain the feelings, people leave clubs and lose affiliations with that club. I still speak to the boys regularly.”

On his old boss and the man who selected him as the Irons’ skipper following the retirement of Mark Noble, Rice added: “I texted the manager at the start of the season saying ‘Good luck boss’. He texted me back. We’ve got a good relationship. People at the club, we’re still constantly talking and I never want it to not be like that.”

Rice has enjoyed a strong start to life at the Emirates, most recently dramatically scoring his first goal for the club against Manchester United before the international break.

West Ham have also started this season strongly, finding themselves ahead of the Gunners on goal difference after 10 points from their opening four games.
