kicker reports that former Schalke manager David Wagner is a candidate to potentially replace Pellegrino Matarazzo at Hoffenheim.

Week by week, the American’s job at the helm at Hoffenheim becomes more and more unstable. Poor results after poor results currently leave Hoffenheim 16th in the Bundesliga with only one win (against newly promoted Holstein Kiel) this season. To top it all off, Hoffenheim threw away a 3-0 lead at the weekend to lose 4-3 to Werder Bremen.

It is reported that Wagner was in PreZero Arena at the weekend as Hoffenheim lost. The 57-year-old last managed Norwich City in the Championship but was sacked after the club failed to gain promotion. He has previously managed Hoffenheim’s youth sides while his last senior spell in Germany was with Schalke.

Germany assistant coach Sandro Wagner has been linked with the job as has former Bayern Munich defender Martin Demichelis. However, it cannot be ruled out that Matarazzo will keep his job as when he joined Hoffenheim at the beginning of 2023 he helped turn the team around.

Matarazzo should also be given he benefit of the doubt as in the summer, Hoffenheim were frankly a mess. Sporting director Alexander Rosen headlined a group of individuals who all left the club, interim director Frank Kramer then had his work cut out when it came to squad building with several deals collapsing and Hoffenheim leaving their business late into the window.
