Before the Dutchman joined Coventry City in 2020, he was playing in the Eredivisie in his homeland with PEC Zwolle. After an incredible couple of seasons at the Coventry Building Society Arena, Hamer eventually moved on to then Premier League side Sheffield United.

To say this signing has been a success would be an understatement. The midfielder was one of the shining sparks in a rather bleak season last term for the Blades, as they were relegated back to the Championship. Fortunately, he's continued to shine this season, helping Chris Wilder's men push towards the Championship title.

Given his impact on the pitch, it would be fair to assume that Hamer could be Sheffield United's most valuable player. However, according to data from Football Transfers, this isn't the case.

Gus Hamer's market value according to data

Valuations of players are always a rather taboo subject. Clubs are obviously keen to retain their star players, which leads to inflated values to fend off any interest from potential buyers, or ensure the selling club receives an adequate fee to replace the departing player.

Truthfully, there is no definitive value for a player on the market. It's all about what the player is worth to the club, and whether they feel any fee would be enough to outweigh the loss of a key player. However, thanks to data, we can now get a rough estimation of an unbiased market value of a player.

Football Transfers takes into consideration plenty of different factors when deciding on a market value - such as previous transfer fees, form, age, and time remaining on contract to name just a few. From this data, they then give an estimated market value for the player in question.

After crunching these numbers on Hamer, Football Transfers estimates that the 27-year-old is worth €16m, which equates to around £13.5m. They also come up with an estimated transfer value range, as a player's price will fluctuate throughout the season. Hamer's ETV range is between €14.4M – €17.7M, which is between £12.2m and £15m.

Data suggests Hamer isn't Sheffield United's most valuable player

As mentioned, it's worth taking these values with a pinch of salt, as they're just an estimate based on data collected throughout the season. The only figure that really matters is the one that Sheffield United decide to put on Hamer, should anyone wish to sign him.

Looking at the estimate provided by Football Transfers, Hamer is one of the highest-ranking members of Wilder's squad, which is no surprise given his contribution this season. However, he isn't the most valuable man currently at Bramall Lane.

The only Sheffield United player more valuable than Hamer, according to data by Football Transfers is centre-back, Anel Ahmedhozic. There isn't much to seperate the two though, as the Bosnian is estimated to be worth €16.5m (£14.5m). The defender also has a higher ETV range, which sits between €14.9M – €18.2M (£12.6m - £15.4m).

This value ranks Ahmedhozic as the 10th most valuable player in the Championship this season, with his Dutch colleague just two places behind as the 12th most valuable. After such an impressive season, it's a surprise to see the Blades have just one player in the top 10 most expensive players in the Championship.
