Gustavo Hamer's future at Sheffield United is uncertain this summer following the club's failure to gain promotion

Ruben Selles has reiterated his desire to see Gus Hamer remain with Sheffield United beyond the summer transfer window.

The playmaker has been a key figure for the Blades during his time at the club, originally signing from Coventry City in 2023.

However, the Blades’ failure to gain promotion to the Premier League last season has led to some uncertainty over his future.

It was reported earlier this month that the 28-year-old is on Leeds United’s shortlist of potential targets in this transfer window.

Ruben Selles issues Gus Hamer future claim

Selles has made it clear that he views Hamer as a key part of the Sheffield United squad following his appointment as the new head coach.

He cannot guarantee that the player will remain at Bramall Lane due to the fluidity of the transfer market, but he’s outlined his hope that he will stay beyond the summer.

“He’s a Sheffield United player, and I think I want him to be a Sheffield United player when the market closes,” said Selles, via Sky Sports.

“So, obviously I cannot control what happens in the future, because the market is so fluid and dynamic sometimes.

“I just want to keep him as one of my players because he has been working really hard for us and for the team.

“And if we can keep him that will mean we will be in a really powerful place to achieve our targets.”

Gus Hamer’s importance to Sheffield United

Hamer made the switch to Sheffield United following their promotion to the Premier League in 2023.

In his time at Bramall Lane, he has contributed 13 goals and 13 assists, with the club only narrowly missing out on promotion straight back to the top flight this year, having been relegated in 2024.

Hamer has a contract with the Yorkshire outfit until 2027, giving them some leverage in any potential transfer talks this summer.

Hamer will be crucial to Selles’ plans

It’s no surprise at all for Selles to publicly back the idea of keeping Hamer given how important he could be to the team next season.

The Dutchman was their standout player in the previous campaign, and will be the driving force of any promotion push, should he stay.

It will have to take a sizable offer to convince the Blades to cash in at this stage, especially as he still has two years left on his contract.
