Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore says striker Lee Gregory could be in contention to feature in Monday’s game against Cambridge United at Hillsborough.

Gregory was forced off during the victory at Fleetwood Town on Boxing Day and was absent for the 2-0 home win over Port Vale on Thursday night, in which his fellow front man Michael Smith’s double secured victory for Wednesday.

The 34-year-old was the Owls’ top scorer last season, but has struggled to hit the same heights in what has been a relatively injury-disrupted campaign this time around, with just four goals to his name so far.

But Gregory has proven himself to still be an integral part of the team when he has featured and has also contributed with three assists.

Wednesday will be looking to move into the top two with victory over the struggling U’s. They go into the game sitting third, but are now level on points with second-placed Ipswich Town after the Tractor Boys were held at Portsmouth, though they are still four behind leaders Plymouth Argyle.

Moore says that while Gregory just missed out against Vale, he is optimistic he could return in the not-too-distant future.

“It’s just a little bit of back spasm,” Moore told The Star.

“We don’t think it will be that long, it’s just that tonight’s game came that little bit too quickly.”

The verdict

It would be a huge boost for Moore to have Gregory back.

While he has found life tougher in front of goal this season, his all-round game and work rate has proven crucial to Wednesday and the improvement he makes to the side is evident whenever he is on the pitch.

Given the Owls’ recent attacking problems, having a fit and firing Gregory would be invaluable, but it is important to exercise caution with his comeback after his recent fitness issues.

With Michael Smith getting himself back on the scoresheet against Vale, it perhaps takes the pressure of rushing Gregory back into action, while Josh Windass was also an unused substitute in the game so will be fresh if called upon against Cambridge.

Moore will also likely be looking for attacking reinforcements in January, but he will be keen to get Gregory available as soon as possible to bolster his front line.
