Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore has provided an injury update ahead of the Owls’ match against Shrewsbury Town this weekend.

Wednesday made it six unbeaten in League One at the weekend as they sealed a 1-0 win over Accrington Stanley. A first-half goal from attacker Alex Mighten was enough to seal the three points for Moore’s men, as the Owls continue to put pressure on Ipswich Town and Plymouth Argyle.

Moore will now be getting ready to prepare his side for this weekend’s clash with Shrewsbury, and a win could see the Owls finish the weekend in the top two, depending on other results.

Ahead of this weekend’s clash, Moore has provided an update on the fitness of Liam Palmer, Mallik Wilks, and George Byers. All three players missed the win over Accrington on Saturday, and the trio will now be assessed this week.

Speaking to Yorkshire Live after Saturday’s game, Moore said: “We certainly hope Liam Palmer will be back from his illness.

“We will assess him [Palmer] this week. [Mallik] Wilks and [George] Byers are both contact injuries. It is whether they can put their body weight through it; they were too sore today. We will assess them this week.”

While these three players may be able to return to the matchday squad fairly soon, Wednesday still look to be without long-term absentee Ben Heneghan, while Akin Famewo and Dennis Adeniran have returned to training but still remain a few weeks away.

The Verdict

Wednesday are in the midst of a decent run of form in the league and cup competitions, and as we head into the busy football period, Moore will want all his players available as soon as possible.

The pressure will be on Moore this season to deliver that promotion back to the Championship, and the Owls are living up to expectations, with them just a few points away from the top of the table.

Palmer, Wilks, and Byers have played a total of 36 games this season, with the trio being crucial to Moore’s preferred style of play, and the Owls manager will be hoping that a week off from midweek football will aid in their recovery.
