Darren Moore admitted Sheffield Wednesday were working hard to get deals done on deadline day without any luck, as he claimed the World Cup impacted the January market.

Whilst it was by no means a bad window for the Owls, who brought in the experienced Aden Flint to replace Mark McGuinness who excelled on loan from Cardiff in the first half of the season, there was a feeling that they could have done more.

Despite many rumours going into the final 24 hours, Wednesday didn’t make any more senior additions but Moore told Yorkshire Live that he is relaxed about the situation as he explained how difficult the mid-season window is.

It’s just football. If you look through the leagues, every club struggled. I’ve said before about the knock-on effect of the World Cup and how players that may have been available, just weren’t there.

We tried. There’s half-a-dozen reasons why we didn’t: agents, not enough wages etc. Did we try? Yes we did. Were we successful? No. But it was always going to be minor surgery in this window.”

Wednesday are back in action with a huge game against Plymouth at Hillsborough on Saturday.

The verdict

There’s no denying it was frustrating for Wednesday that they didn’t get another new face or two in as it would’ve helped the squad for their promotion push.

However, crucially, they were not in a desperate situation and Moore will be very happy with the group he has as they’re more than capable of finishing the job.

As he points out, January is a difficult month and the Owls didn’t panic when they couldn’t get the deals they wanted, which is the sensible approach.
