After a stalemate at Carrow Road on Sunday, the Canaries spectacularly imploded within the first 45 minutes at Elland Road to fall three goals behind before the half-time whistle.

Ilia Gruev’s cheeky free kick opened the scoring for the hosts, while Joel Piroe doubled the advantage on the 20-minute mark with a close-range header.

Georgina Rutter made it three five minutes before the break, before Crysencio Summerville rounded off the scoring midway through the second stanza to put the gloss on a resounding performance by Daniel Farke’s side.

Darren Huckerby’s frank review of Norwich City’s Championship play-off defeat to Leeds United

It’s fair to say that Huckerby wasn’t pleased with what he saw from the men in yellow and green on Thursday night, with the Yorkshire side trampling all over their opponents to seal the resounding victory.

The 48-year-old played for both clubs during his career, with a 16-month stint with Leeds around the turn of the century followed up with a five-year spell at Carrow Road towards the end of his career.

And the ex-winger pulled no punches in his short, sharp review on X, having been upset with the lack of impetus in Sunday’s first leg, as well as the difference in class in Thursday’s affair.

Angus Gunn could be called into question for the first two goals of the night, with Gruev’s free kick catching him out at his near post to give Leeds an early advantage, while the shot-stopper would feel he could also do better with the cross into the penalty area for United’s second.

It wasn’t just the goalkeeper that will have doubts over his performance though, with David Wagner’s [pictured] side only mustering a single shot on target throughout the 90 minutes, with Josh Sargent ruing his missed one-on-one against Illan Meslier.

The hosts were seemingly cutting City open at will, with Gunn being called upon time and time again to keep the scoreline respectable, as the Canaries ended their season in the most miserable of manners.

Norwich City Championship season ends in heartbreak

It has been Norwich’s away form that has plagued them all season, with only five teams in the division having a worse record on the road than Wagner’s side during the regular season.

It speaks volumes that those five sides were the ones fighting relegation all season, with the Norfolk side only picking up six wins and six draws away from Carrow Road, with 11 defeats, a damning figure to deal with.

That untrustworthy nature when not in East Anglia came to the fore once again on Thursday, with a soft core exposed time and time again by former boss Farke’s rampant Leeds side.

Having not made the most of home advantage on Sunday, it was always going to be a tough task for the Canaries to make next weekend’s play-off final, but to exit in such unceremonious circumstances has certainly irked Huckerby, as well as City supporters.
