Many thought the job would be Ranieri’s for life after he led City to the promised land, but he was sacked in February 2017 with the side embroiled in a relegation battle.

And Simpson has attributed the remarkable reversal of fortunes to team selection issues.

“I got dropped for the first Champions League game, I’m fuming”, Simpson told The Beautiful Game Podcast (via the Daily Star).

“He played Luis Hernández and I’m sat there thinking ‘I’ve just spent all last season working my socks off to play in the Champions League, first Champions League game, I ain’t playing’.”

Simpson and fellow senior members of the squad voiced their dissatisfaction to late chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, who took the drastic step of sacking the erstwhile revered Ranieri.

The 68-year-old subsequently went on to take the reins at Nantes, Fulham and Roma. He has been in charge of Sampdoria since last October.

Simpson was released by Leicester at the end of last season, and the 33-year-old is now plying his trade with Championship side Huddersfield.
