On Friday, Danny Rose spoke publicly for the first time since making the temporary switch from Tottenham to Newcastle, which has the ability to become permanent this summer.
Though Rose was healthy and roaring to go under Mourinho, the ‘Special One’ employed Japhet Tanganga and Ryan Sessegnon in his place, which left the England international in a state of shock.
While Rose gave Mourinho credit for turning the team around, he revealed his disappointment in not being able to be a part of it.
“I do feel I wasn’t given as much of a chance as everybody else in the backline. I did want to play for [Mourinho],” he told BBC 5 Live.
“I knew after a month [of Mourinho joining] I was never going to play. It was difficult going out to train knowing I wasn’t going to play.
“It’s not worked out, but full respect to him and what he’s doing at the club. He took over with the club 12 points adrift of Chelsea and now it’s four.
”I have to be honest, I thought I would continue playing.”
With no other options, Rose had to find himself a new club in order to remain in contention for this summer’s Euros.
Fortunately for the 29-year-old, he happened to be watching when Jetro Willems went down. Rose got on the phone with his agent immediately and helped facilitate his loan deal to St. James’ Park.
“I’ve been given a chance to play week in and week out. I want to play football again – with the Euros in the summer, I want to put myself in the window.
”If I go to Newcastle and do well they may think that’s what’s expected of me. But if I don’t do well then they might think Tottenham were right to let me go.
“I have a lot riding on this, but I’m confident in my ability and I know I will do well.”
After the winter break, Rose could make his first start in a Newcastle shirt when they travel to face Arsenal at the Emirates.
