Danny Rohl offers update on Scott Wright’s Rangers exit

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl was (again) offering no clues on his intentions in the transfer window, which gave Scottish press the licence to criticise as ‘frosty’ his refusal to comment on any names, which meant sideswiping the Scott Wright story entirely.

The German manager, at the Owls since last year, has been heavily linked with a move for Rangers’ surplus winger, who was, as we reported, included on the trip to Holland.

But when asked about it, he did as he has with all transfer stories – cards close to his chest.

He said:

“I will not speak about names because it makes no sense. This market goes so quick. We have an idea what we want to have, I have an idea of how I want to play in the new season. We know what we have to improve when we look back from last season and then it’s about finding the right pieces to make our squad stronger and stronger because we are very ambitious for the new season.”

This is absolutely no different to what he said pre-January window last year when asked on similar things:

“First it is always about looking at what we can do in the transfer market, which type or profile we need. The first question is not about the money or the salary, it’s about choosing the right player for us. If we say yes, then we look to the terms. This is the way. Sometimes you need a good player in a key position and this costs money, but also I am looking for young players to come in so I can improve them. Now we have to find a good balance between who can help us immediately and give us a good impact, and maybe who is the guy to improve us in the next weeks and be ready for the future.”

Then lastly:

“Everybody knows what I demand and what I expect in January. I have made clear a list of what I want to do in the market and this is a normal process. It is not an idea from just one day, they are ideas from a process from me and my coaching staff, we sat together and always have meetings every week. You see some players that may not have been first on the list and they have made a step in the right direction. It is about supporting them and keeping them, but there are others that are a little bit far away. You have to be honest with those players. We have to look what we can do from both sides. It is important I see the human behind the player.”

In short, he never comments on exact speculation, and evades all questions pertaining to something more precise.

The Scottish press turned that into ‘cryptic’ and ‘spiky’ with ‘frosty’ mentioned in there too – no, this is just how the German does business.

Not unlike how ex-Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst did it – playing it very cryptic indeed.

These new quotes neither pour cold water on Wright’s potential move from Ibrox or the opposite.

Time will just tell.
