Danny Mills namechecks Arsenal and Liverpool as he backs Leeds United's Daniel Farke decision

Former Leeds United player Danny Mills thinks that the Whites made the right decision by sticking with Daniel Farke despite the German coach's failure to get the team promoted back to the Premier League.

There are probably fewer worse ways to miss out on promotion than the way that Leeds did last season. The automatic spots were in the palms of their hands in the regular season, and then a complete end-of-season collapse, which involved four losses and just as many points picked up in their last half-dozen games, shunted them into the play-offs.

But they got another go at it, which started well. Beating Farke's former club Norwich City booked them a ticket to Wembley, where they, again, fell flat on their faces, putting in a lacklustre performance against Southampton and they lost 1-0.

Farke was brought in because he was regarded as the Championship promotion specialist. He has now lost some of that pixie dust that he once held, and questions were asked about his future with the club. They ultimately decided to push on with the German at the helm into the next campaign.

Mills, a former Whites player who was fielded over 100 times by the club, thinks they made the right call.

The versatile defender believes that he can see what Farke is trying to do with this squad, and he doesn't see why the club would look to change managers again so quickly.

Speaking to FLW via BetVictor, he said: "I think there was a lot of upheaval at the start of last season and that was difficult and they got off to a difficult start and then they came good and they played really good. They had one of the best squads. They had a lot of Premier League players within that. I think he’s done well enough to hold on to his job. If you change again, what's the point in that?

"He's building something. He's built a way of playing. The players have faith in him. OK, they didn't quite get over the line in the end. But that can happen. All the teams going for it were very, very strong, they all had their dips of form. Leeds’ just came at the wrong time, towards the end of the season, probably 10 games to go and didn't quite get over it.

"I think he's earned the right to have a second season. If they don't go off to a good start, he won't be there long. Again, the nature of football. But I think they proved the style of play, that they had some of the performances that they put in. I think you can build on that now.

"We've seen that before. When Liverpool came close to winning the Premier League, didn't quite make it, win again. The second season, Arsenal were better this season than they were last season. I know they didn't win it, but they were much better. They were much closer, so I think sometimes giving the manager that second season, a bit more settled, is always a good idea."

Leeds must be aware of Daniel Farke's record

It would have been a very bold call if Leeds had decided to sack a manager that had just got 90 points in a season. Yes, he didn't hit his targets, but they're the first team to ever get that many points and not go up automatically.

Even if they sell some members of the squad, which it certainly seems they will have to, Leeds should still be decent contenders to go up next season with Farke at the helm.

At the less encouraging end of the stick, there is the question of what do they do if they get promoted? Because the German's record in the Premier League is atrocious.

His top flight resume isn't enough to get him the sack now, because they need to get their first. But, if they do end up back in the Premier League sooner rather than later, they need to prepare for the eventuality of getting rid of him then, because history suggests that it won't go well with him in charge.
