Portsmouth head coach Danny Cowley has admitted that the club received a couple of offers for Ryan Tunnicliffe on Friday.

The midfielder was left out of Pompey’s squad for yesterday’s showdown with Cheltenham Town and has not featured for the club since their 3-3 draw with Sheffield Wednesday on the opening weekend of the season.

In the absence of Tunnicliffe, Portsmouth managed to back up their recent victory over Cardiff City in the League Cup by sealing all three points at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium.

Marlon Pack was accompanied in the heart of midfield by Louis Thompson in this particular fixture.

Portsmouth opened the scoring in the 30th minute as Colby Bishop slotted home from close range.

Following the break, Bishop doubled Pompey’s advantage from the spot after Michael Jacobs was fouled by Ryan Jackson in the penalty area.

Cheltenham were unable to find a way back into the game as Portsmouth eased to victory.

Making reference to Tunnicliffe, Cowley has revealed that the club have received offers for the 29-year-old.

Speaking to The News after his side’s 2-0 win over Cheltenham, Cowley said: “I think there were a couple of offers for Ryan Tunnicliffe yesterday I believe – but I don’t know where they’re at.”

The Verdict

With Tunnicliffe attracting interest from elsewhere, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for him in the coming weeks.

Given that the transfer window is set to close at the start of September, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if Portsmouth opt to part ways with the midfielder as he has only made one cameo appearance this season.

Having bolstered their options in central midfield by swooping for Pack and Tom Lowery, Pompey may not necessarily miss Tunnicliffe if he does depart.

No longer guaranteed first-team football at Fratton Park, it could be argued that the midfielder ought to consider sealing a move away from Portsmouth for the sake of his career.

By joining a club who are willing to play him week-in, week-out, Tunnicliffe could potentially rediscover his best form.
