Portsmouth can have another successful campaign next year following their promotion to the Championship.

That's according to Carlton Palmer, who does however admit that he is unsure if the club will be able to secure a second consecutive promotion next season.

Tuesday night certainly proved to be a memorable one for everyone associated with Pompey. Two late goals saw John Mousinho's side beat Barnsley 3-2 at Fratton Park, to seal the League One title.

In doing so, the club also ended a 12-year wait for a return to the Championship, sparking wild celebrations in the city.

Following that success, Portsmouth will now be looking to re-establish themselves as a second-tier club once again.

The obvious example for Pompey to look to follow, is Ipswich Town. Following their promotion from League One last season, the Tractor Boys are now in a four-way battle for automatic promotion to the Premier League with the three sides relegated from the top-flight last season.

Given how long they have been out of the division, it would be a remarkable feat for Pompey to replicate that next season.

But while Palmer admits he is unsure whether Portsmouth will be able to go that far, he is confident that the club will have another enjoyable campaign next time around.

Carlton Palmer makes early Portsmouth Championship Prediction

While the season is still yet to end for the vast majority of teams, with the League One title now secure, Pompey have plenty of time to start preparing for life back in the Championship.

Now it appears as though Palmer has high expectations for the club's return to the second-tier, even if he admits they will have work to do in the transfer window to be sure of success.

Speaking to Football League World, the former England man was asked if he thinks Pompey can match Ipswich, and challenge for promotion in their first season back in the Championship.

Responding to that question, Palmer said: "Portsmouth have romped League One and I can see them doing really well in the Championship next season. They signed good players at the start of last year and I really did fancy them to do really well, and there were fancied by everybody to do well.

"But it's another thing after being fancied well, to then do well, and they have been absolutely outstanding. So I can see Portsmouth going again next season, and being very successful in the Championship. "Yes they'll have to add to the squad, they're going to lose a few players who have been in on loan and they've got to recruit well again, which I'm sure they'll be looking at. But I can certainly see Portsmouth being very very successful again next season.

"Whether they can get promoted like Ipswich might do I don't know, but we'll wait and see, and I certainly see them doing really well."

Portsmouth should be confident about Championship return

There are certainly reasons for Pompey to be optimistic as they prepare for their return to Championship football.

Following such an impressive season, they ought to be going into the new campaign with plenty of momentum, which ought to allow them to hit the ground running.

They also have a strong squad, and if they are backed in the transfer window in the same way they been this season, their recruitment suggests they can put together a team that is more than capable of being competitive in the second-tier.

Meanwhile, the huge backing they have from their fanbase can also be a major factor, lifting their own squad, and making Fratton Park a difficult place for visiting teams to come.

That too, should help Portsmouth pick up the points they need to be competitive next season.

It is also worth noting that in John Mousinho, they have a manager who is rather similar to Ipswich's Kieran McKenna, in that he is making his mark right from the start of his managerial career, coping brilliantly with the challenges being thrown at him.

Having such an individual in charge should also suit the club well as they prepare for the step back up to the next level.

So with all that in mind, there is absolutely no reason for this not to be seen as an exciting time for anyone connected with Portsmouth FC.
