The midfielder helped Crewe Alexandra secure promotion to League One in 2020, and has gone on to play against Portsmouth on a number of occasions.

Cowley has claimed that the player will bring a high level of energy to the team, adding a bright spark to his midfield that he is excited to get to grips with.

The Portsmouth manager also believes that Lowery can bring a high level of creativity to the squad, and that his ambitions are similar to those of the club.

“It’s a fantastic signing for the football club and we’re delighted to have him with us,” said Cowley, via the club’s official website.

“Tom is someone we’ve come up against on many occasions and has been an outstanding player for Crewe for many years.

“He provides unrivalled energy and is very competent technically, so will bring a real creativity to our midfield.

“At 24, he’s still a young man and his ambitions are aligned with ours.

“We’re impressed with his knowledge of the game and his love for it.

“He has a real motivation to keep improving all the time and these are the qualities that we really like in players.

“Whenever we played against Crewe, he was always the first one we spoke about when doing our analysis.

“He would always find them a real rhythm in games and so we’re certainly pleased to now have him on our side.”

Fratton Park?

1-0 loss 2-1 win 3-2 win 4-3 loss

Portsmouth got their latest league campaign underway last weekend with a thrilling 3-3 draw away to one of the favourites for promotion, Sheffield Wednesday.

The team returns to action later this afternoon, when the Fratton Park faithful welcome the team for their first home game of the campaign against Lincoln City.

The Verdict

Lowery is a really solid creative addition to the Portsmouth squad for the season ahead.

Despite hope that it would be a quieter summer than 12 months ago, it has still been a busy transfer period for the team.

But a result and performance like last weekend’s increases optimism that it could be a great campaign for Cowley’s side.

The team has moved well in the market to improve the squad without feeling the damage of losses like Marcus Harness and Gavin Bazunu too harshly.

It will be interesting to see how Lowery links up with the likes of Joe Morrell and Ryan Tunnicliffe in the coming months.
