Nottingham Forest have ushered in a new era with the appointment of Steve Cooper as the club’s new head coach.

Having departed Swansea City over the summer after two seasons in South Wales, Cooper takes on a new challenge at the Tricky Trees, filling the vacancy that Chris Hughton opened up with his departure last week.

Since the 62-year-old left the club, Forest have finally won a game having been successful away at Huddersfield and the man who was in charge that day is staying on the coaching staff in Steven Reid.

Cooper was always Forest’s first choice to replace Hughton and they had to agree a compensation package with Swansea to bring him to the City Ground as they were still paying his contract which ran until next summer.

It marks the first big decision undertaken by new CEO Dane Murphy who was brought in from Barnsley this summer and he’s spoken out following Cooper’s appointment and why he’s the right fit for the club.

“Steve was our first choice as head coach and we are delighted to have secured his services,” Murphy told Forest’s official website.

“His record of developing young talent is exceptional.

“Steve knows what is required to be successful in the Championship and has a proven track record with Swansea.

“We have reduced the age of our squad over the summer and Steve is the ideal coach to blend a team to start moving us up the table.

“On behalf of the owner and the Board, we welcome Steve to the club and look forward to providing every support he needs to be a success at Nottingham Forest”.

The Verdict

Murphy’s had a tough introduction to the job since making the move from Barnsley – it’s certainly been a baptism of fire.

Forest fans may have been expecting to immediately see Murphy’s work reap rewards instantly, but you get the feeling that some of the recruitment choices over the summer weren’t anything to do with him.

He now though has his first-choice head coach so the club as a whole can now move forward with excitement – Cooper’s results over the past few years show a coach who knows how to get the best out of his players and there’s obvious quality in that Forest squad.

Saturday’s victory will have instilled a bit of confidence and belief in the squad and Cooper could capitalise on that with his arrival ahead of his first match in charge against Millwall.
