Barcelona president charged with bribery

The judge investigating the ‘Negreira’ case has now charged Barcelona president Joan Laporta with bribery, relating to his first presidential term (2003-2010). Laporta is implicated alongside former leaders and directors, accused of bribing referees. The investigation now extends to 2008 due to Laporta’s involvement.

Barcelona’s injury crisis deepens

It hasn’t been a great day for Barcelona, with captain Sergi Roberto picking up a calf strain in training. Barça now have eight injured players and only 11 senior players available, including two goalkeepers, leaving Xavi with limited options. Roberto may miss the upcoming game against Athletic Club but could return against Shakhtar Donetsk or Real Madrid later this month.

Tonali expected to play for Newcastle despite looming ban for betting

Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, facing a potential 12-month ban for his involvement in a betting scandal in Italian football, is expected to play against Crystal Palace this weekend. Tonali is alleged to have placed illegal bets on his former team, AC Milan, but determining his suspension may take up to a month, allowing him to be available for selection, possibly even in the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund on 7 November. Italian investigators are reviewing Tonali’s mobile phone and tablet content, and his agent has admitted the midfielder has a gambling addiction. Juventus’s Nicolò Fagioli was already banned for seven months in the same case on Tuesday.

Lionel Messi scored two goals in 10 minutes as Argentina overcame Peru in a World Cup qualifier, leaving the reigning world champions top of the standings. With these goals, Messi now holds the record for the most goals in CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying with 31, surpassing former Barcelona team-mate Luis Suárez.

Manchester United’s date with destiny in Paris

Manchester United are aiming to qualify for the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage for the first time when they take on Paris Saint-Germain in Wednesday’s second leg. The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw last week. PSG have some injury concerns ahead of the meeting at Parc des Princes, while United’s Gabby George suffered an ACL injury earlier this week which might keep her out for up to a year.
