A former coach of Cristiano Ronaldo has questioned Erik ten Hag's ability as Manchester United manager, insisting it takes a special kind of coach to deal with the Portugal international.

The first bombshell of Ronaldo's infamous interview was the want-away striker's admission that he does not respect Ten Hag, whom he accused of lacking respect for him in the first place.

While many have defended Ten Hag, it was Ronaldo who was supported by former coach Jose Morais, a former assistant to Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid, where he worked alongside the striker for three years.

"I'm just saying that you have to be a special coach to train special players," Morais told A Bola.

"Being a special coach implies knowing how to deal with situations like the one that is happening. Positive communication. The establishment of trust depends on factors that relate to the individual's personal development. The best coach is better able to deal with these situations."

Morais went on to recall his own experiences of working alongside Ronaldo, insisting the striker is a 'fantastic person'.

"Working with Cristiano was one of the best moments I have as a coach," he said. "He is a fantastic person and a stratospheric player.

"I don't say 'UFO' because he is a human being. He would be more of a 'Human of Unidentified Characteristics'. Such is the enormity of his ability and talent.
