Cristiano Ronaldo sent a text to Piers Morgan from the dressing room, claiming that he did get a touch on Bruno Fernandes’s cross which resulted in Portugal’s first goal against Uruguay on Monday.
Portugal secured a 2-0 victory thanks to a brace from Manchester United midfielder Fernandes.
It was initially believed that Ronaldo had opened the scoring with a header in the 54th minute. The 37-year-old wheeled away in celebration after the ball found the back of Sergio Rochet’s net.
However, replays were unable to prove whether Ronaldo actually got a touch on the ball, so the goal was awarded to Fernandes.
Ronaldo was subbed off with 10 minutes to go before Portugal were awarded a late penalty.
With the five-time Ballon d’Or winner now in the dugout, Fernandes stepped up and fired Portugal through to the 2022 World Cup knockout stages.
Ronaldo appeared to be claiming that the ball brushed his hair on the way in after the final whistle.

Meanwhile, on Fox Sports, former United States international Alexi Lalas revealed: “Breaking news is that Cristiano Ronaldo did not score, despite his claims that it did touch him.
“I was just with Piers Morgan. He said that Cristiano texted him from the locker room saying he believes that it touched his head. Who knows…”

Some on social media are now claiming that the meme of Ronaldo walking down the Old Trafford tunnel with ‘I’m going to tell Piers Morgan’ on it is actually true to life.
The meme first went viral after Ronaldo gave a controversial interview to Morgan – an interview that eventually led to his departure from Man Utd earlier this month.
Unsurprisingly, Morgan has called for Ronaldo to be awarded Portugal’s first goal against Uruguay.
“Ronaldo touched that ball,” the broadcaster insisted. “He should be awarded the goal.”
It doesn’t appear that Fernandes is overly bothered about who is awarded the goal.
The midfielder presumed that Ronaldo had got the final touch.
“I celebrated as if it had been Cristiano’s goal,” he told reporters, per The Mirror, after the match. “It seemed to me that he had touched the ball. My aim was to cross the ball for him.
“We are happy with the victory regardless of who scored. The most important thing is that we achieved our aim which is to be in the next round.”
