On Sunday afternoon, Cristian Romero made his first appearance since lasting just 15 minutes of the defeat at home to Chelsea in December. After a very shaky start to the game, he managed to dust some cobwebs off, before being replaced by fellow central defender and long term absentee, Micky van de Ven, on the hour mark.
The Argentine defender took to social media after the game, saying the following: “After a difficult period and full of things that happened in the middle, I am back with the group and happy to be able to help the team.
Surely there is a lot to correct and work on, but we are together and eager to reverse this situation. See you on Thursday, we will come back stronger than ever, all together.
Grateful to the physios of @afaseleccion (the Argentina national team) for getting me out of a bad time and putting me back on the court where I am so happy. Thank you all for the support as always.”
Now, most of that is just a normal statement. In fact, you would hardly be surprised if most of that came from his camp. Not saying it is a bad thing per se, but in general it is pretty generic stuff. Apart from one line.
Thanking the physios of Argentina, but not Spurs’, is, well, quite something, and quite concerning. Physios from half way across the world have been able to help him, but not the ones at the club.
There has been plenty said about the medical department at Spurs this season, which is quite expected – given the unprecedented amount of injuries so far. Some have blamed Ange and his methods instead, whilst others have said neither (Ange nor the medical department) are blameless.
We’ll have to see what happens from here. On Sunday, it felt wise from Ange to give Romero an hour and van de Ven half an hour – a good way of managing both their minutes. Let’s all pray that both players are available to start the huge game against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League round of 16 second leg on Thursday evening.
You hope that they will continue to be available in every game, but the games in Europe are the absolute key. It is so important to have both of them available. That is, if there are any more games in Europe beyond Thursday.
