Crewe Alexandra have had their next transfer target handed to them
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Crewe Alexandra are ramping up preparations for the impending League Two campaign.
Lee Bell’s side failed to build on their 2024 play-off finish last term, slumping to 13th in the fourth-tier.
Next season will be the Railwaymen’s fourth season back in the division following their relegation from League One in 2022.
Bell has added Josh March, Louis Moult, Reece Hutchinson, Phil Croker, Emre Tezgel, Tommi O'Reilly and Sam Waller to his ranks this summer, with sights firmly set on a return to the top seven.
Football League World's Crewe Alexandra fan pundit, Jay Hodson, has highlighted one more signing the club should make before the end of the window.
“There is one simple, realistic target that we should be after,” stated Jay. “That is Luke Offord.
“Offord has been rumoured this summer to come back to us. He was with us before he left for MK Dons and came through our academy system.
“He left on a free to go to them. There have been rumours behind closed doors that he still lives in the area, has to travel to work every day and would prefer to fully relocate back home.
“But no deal yet has been arranged with Milton Keynes Dons. I think they have favoured him more since the pre-season started. But it's realistic because he literally cemented his place in the team before he got injured with us, before he subsequently left.
“He was an absolute animal, and he'd fit perfectly in our midfield again. It's probably what we need, another defensive midfielder, to have as a hook and anchor. So that would be a realistic signing.
“Whether that could happen now because of how Milton Keynes rate him more now with Paul Warne, might not be the case. But in terms of realism, he's been rumoured to come back and he'd fit in perfectly with our system.”
MK Dons suffered a dismal 2024/25 campaign, with five different managers taking control of the team during the season.
This downward trajectory hasn’t been kind to the club in recent years, going from challenging for a place in the Championship to languishing towards the bottom of the Football League.
However, it would still be quite ambitious for Crewe to make a successful swoop for Offord.
The 25-year-old made 42 appearances in League Two for MK Dons last term and was one of their standout performers throughout.
Acquiring Offord would require a transfer fee and a willingness from the former Crewe star to return to the Mornflake Stadium.
Therefore, it may take more than its worth for the Railwaymen to secure Offord’s services once again this summer.
