Coventry United have been relegated from the Barclays Women’s Championship with three games of the season left to play.

It has been a tough season for Lee Burch’s side and the Warwickshire club’s brave battle for survival has now come to an end.

Coventry United went into this afternoon’s action in the Barclays Women’s Championship nine points adrift of safety. With just four games remaining, The Red and Greens knew that they needed to get a favourable result at Lewes and then hope that their relegation rivals were defeated.

As the action unfolded, Coventry United went some way to doing their job. The Red and Greens battled to a spirited 1-1 draw with Lewes at The Dripping Pan. Elsewhere, Blackburn Rovers’ 2-2 draw with Durham was enough to secure their second tier status for another year while Sunderland’s safety was also confirmed, despite being defeated 2-1 by Crystal Palace.

The only other club that Coventry United could still catch were Sheffield United. The Blades travelled to Barclays Women’s Championship leaders Bristol City for the day’s late kick-off. Sheffield United were massive underdogs at The Robins High Performance Centre but they pulled off an upset, beating Bristol City 1-0 thanks to Courtney Sweetman-Kirk’s first half goal. Sheffield United’s victory has confirmed Coventry United’s relegation.

Coventry United will now play FA Women’s National League football next season with the divisional line-ups being announced following the conclusion of the season.
