Coventry City hold perfect Vincent Kompany replacement for Burnley: View | OneFootball

The Clarets had picked up some much-needed form heading into the final few games, but their drop from the Premier League was confirmed following a defeat away to Tottenham Hotspur in their final away fixture, bowing out with a defeat to Nottingham Forest at Turf Moor.

It concluded a rather underwhelming term for Vincent Kompany and his players, having cantered to the second tier title the season prior, with many predicting a top half finish under the former Manchester City defender.

And while Burnley's full attention will now turn to pre-season to ensure an immediate return to the top flight, they could be doing so without their Belgian manager at the helm.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Kompany had been linked with the vacant manager's position at Bayern Munich, following Thomas Tuchel's announcement earlier in the season that he would leave the club at the end of the campaign.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Wednesday that talks between the two parties were progressing, with The Guardian journalist, Jacob Steinberg, also revealing that an agreement between Kompany and the 31-time Bundesliga champions was now ‘close’ to being sealed.

While losing the 38-year-old would be a bitter blow for the Clarets in their quest for an immediate return to the Premier League, a hefty compensation fee would need to be paid to Burnley, given that he is contracted at Turf Moor until the end of the 2027/28 season.

According to Sky Germany, that fee could be in the region of €20 million (£17.04 million) to ensure a move can be completed, which Burnley would most likely use to reinvest to the squad and surrounding areas of the club.

But with these latest updates, a number of names have been linked with the potential gig at Turf Moor, with the Lancashire club keen to find a replacement as soon as possible as pre-season edges ever closer.

Mark Robins could be Vincent Kompany's ideal replacement

One name that very rarely gets linked with vacant roles in the Championship and Premier League is Coventry City manager, Mark Robins, and it's difficult to understand why.

It was reported by TBR Football last week that the Sky Blues boss was being considered as an option for the Clarets to consider, along with Ashley Cole, should they part with ways with Kompany this summer.

The 54-year-old has just completed his sixth full season with the Sky Blues during his second stint with the West Midlands outfit, guiding them to a ninth-placed finish in the final standings and an FA Cup semi-final.

Since his arrival at the CBS Arena in March 2017, it has been a gradual, yet impressive progression for Coventry under Robins' stewardship, earning two promotions from League One and Two as well as an EFL Trophy triumph during his first season in charge.

His managerial record speaks for itself, not only during his time with the Sky Blues, but throughout his career. Across the 764 fixtures he has managed with the likes of Rotherham United, Barnsley and Huddersfield Town, Robins has averaged 1.44 points per game, accumulating 1099 points in that time.

Having gone so close to earning the Sky Blues promotion to the Premier League during the 2022/23 season, Robins will surely fancy a crack at managing in the top flight and could do so with Burnley.

With the financial advantages the Lancashire club possess given the parachute payments they will receive upon their relegation and the potential fee they could receive for Kompany should he depart from Turf Moor, puts them in a strong position to negotiate a deal.

Robins signed a new contract with Coventry in May 2022, so a compensation fee would have to be paid by the Clarets, but for a man who has worked wonders with a squad over the years and making them a competitive Championship outfit, it could be worth every single penny.

The next couple of days will provide the Burnley hierarchy with a clearer picture of the next steps they will take to bring a new manager to the Turf Moor helm, but given the options at their disposal, they should look no further than the current Coventry City boss.
